Portpatrick Village Hall, Nr Stranraer - 22nd February 2006

Gig Review - Shirl Gibson, St.Helens, Merseyside.

Keith and I set off from Rainford in the early hours of the morning, and got to Portpatrick for 9am. We started the day off by grabbing a breakfast at the Crown Hotel, then went to find the place where we expected to get our tickets. The address we had for the village hall turned out to be a corner premises, next to the local post office so we asked there for information. The assistants there put us in the direction of the hotel across the road.

We spent the day in and around the areas of Portpatrick and Stranraer, which was about 6 miles or so away. We called back to the hotel bar for a couple of beers before moving on to the Crown which was a bit nearer to the hall. We were pleasantly surprised to bump into the band who were tucking into a bar meal, so we caught up with them for a bit of pre-gig chat, before they moved on for the soundcheck. We managed to grab a quick meal ourselves on the way to the hall at the Waterfront.

I was really pleased by the amount of local publicity there was for the gig. There were posters in and around the place, eg shops and pubs. The venue was the local village hall, a small community building by the police station. It had quite a mural on the back of the stage, depicting the local lifeboat service.

The FOURGOODMEN set was solid, and the locals were very receptive. I would estimate there were about 100 people in there, which wasn't too bad for the size of the place. If I remember correctly, there were some others who had travelled [from Glasgow I think] for the gig.The journey to Portpatrick was well worth the effort. All in all, a great way to start off the new year.
