How do I package and ship champagne/sparkling wine?
I have a New Mexican specialty champagne, it's sparkling wine bottled with orange juice. I'd like to send some as a gift to NY for the holidays.
How do I package it so that it doesn't get too shaken up, freeze, or explode? Also, how can I get around any laws restricting shipping alcohol out of NM or into NY?
Answer:
It is illegal to ship interstate without paying taxes on it.
Unfortunately, you need an alcohol license in order to pay the tax.
So, you are basically left to shipping it illegally. Lots of people do this daily, but just be aware that if your bottle breaks they may open it and you *could* be fined for it.
Now, first rule is DO NOT USE USPS. It is expressly illegal, and you will be fined for it. Don't even try, it's not worth it.
So, always use UPS or FedEx or DHL (who seems to care the least about shipping alcohol).
In terms of packaging, use a big box and fill it up with packing peanuts or stuff it with newspapers. Wrap the bottle in a lot of bubble wrap, and then seal it in a plastic bag. You may need to tape two bags together, but the idea is that if the glass were to break you want the bag to hold most of the liquid. The newspaper will help absorb some of the spill.
My last piece of advice, is to drop the box from a couple feet. Let's be honest, this is how it will be treated so it's better it breaks now where you won't be out the shipping cost or a potential fine.
