The Ins and Outs of Firewood
Do you have unanswered questions regarding firewood to be used in your wood stove or fireplace? Questions like---What different types of firewood are there? Where can I purchase firewood? What questions should I ask the firewood dealer? Which wood is better to use, softwood or hardwood?
Knowing the various kinds of firewood that are available in your particular area will simplify the decision on what kind to buy. There are many species of trees, some of which may be more readily available in your area. Keep in mind, local wood should be more reasonably priced than wood shipped in by truck.
Below is a partial list of firewood and BTU content which may help you know what wood will work the best for you. 1 MTBU stands for 1 million British Thermal Units which is a measurement for heat value. The higher the BTU, the more heat that will be produced from the wood.

Firewood dealers can be found in local newspapers and in the phonebook. When calling dealers, ask what kind of wood they have. Is the price for a full cord, 4' x 4' x 8', or a face cord, 2' x 4' x 8'? Is the firewood cured? For how long? Is the wood split? Be sure to specify the length of log you want, so you can get it into your wood stove or fireplace. Does the quoted price include delivery and stacking? Sometimes the cord price is less if you have a truck and can pick the wood up yourself or if you can buy the wood not split and split it yourself. The best time to buy, if possible, is in the spring or early summer because the price per cord might be increased the closer you get to fall and winter.
There are pluses in using softwood or hardwood. Pine, Fir, Spruce and Aspen are some of the most common
softwood. They have lower BTUs but can keep you warm and cozy in the winter. Another plus is that softwood is easier to ignite than hardwood. Softwoods are also less expensive than hardwoods. The plus for hardwoods is that even though it is harder to start, it produces higher heat and burns much cleaner than softwood, which means your chimney stays cleaner.
A good way to get your fire started easier is to use fat wood. Fat wood is small sticks of pine with a natural high resin content. One or two of these sticks will instantaneously ignite, giving a slow, hot flame, easily lighting most wood.
