Your Essential Djembe Drum Buying Guide
Shopping for djembe drums can be daunting, if you don’t know what you need. Different drum sizes, head types, tuning mechanisms and shell composition all play a part in creating the drum’s personality. Consider the drum as an extended part of yourself, as another way to communicate your feelings. This buying guide should shed some light on the subject, allowing you to find your perfect drum.
Picking the material for your shell
In making the djembe drum, a wide variety of shells can be used to create an instrument that is man-made or authentically natural. When deciding what to buy, take into account the environment in which you intend to play the drum. If you choose one made from natural material, such as a body composed of wood, you should make sure that it has undergone special treatment so that your drum does not get bugs nor rot. Be careful when buying a traditionally built drum because this can be a problem in some foreign places. In most cases, the manufacturer will use a type of fiberglass to create the drum's body. These man-made drums are quite sturdy; they play well and hold up admirably despite poor conditions. There will be a slight variance in the quality of tone, it being less "earthy", however, the projection as you perform with still be satisfactory.
Choosing your drum head
Djembe drum heads are traditionally made of skin, usually goat hide. They are adequate, especially for traditional drums, but they do need additional maintenance. Using a head made of natural skin provides an extremely rich tone, and is suitable for someone living in an area with low humidity. However, if you live in a climate with higher humidity, you may want to opt for a drum that has a synthetic drum head instead. Synthetic heads tend to be made from Mylar, or sometimes a different polyester film. A synthetic head is designed to reproduce the tone and feel of its natural counterpart; additionally, it sounds great when used in the studio. The synthetic heads are also great in almost any climate and that versatility is really what sets them apart for the casual player.
Selecting a tuning method
Most manufactured drums come with some form of mechanical tuning, which essentially means that they use bolts instead of rope. This design is popular because it is much easier to learn how to tune and change the drum heads -- simply loosen the bolts and remove the head. With a rope tuned drum, it takes a bit more practice. If you have this type of tuning, you should find a professional to assist you the first couple of times until you feel comfortable with the procedure of tuning and changing the skin. Tune your percussion instrument properly to avoid harming a drum. A more common method is rope tuning and if the head is natural, this makes the sound more special and authentic.
