During oral surgery, the anesthesia and medication used can cause side effects. Some effects from the medications given could include, nausea, vomiting and even drowsiness. Additionally, you might itch, and have rashes or hive.

2. Swelling, Discoloration, Pain, Bruising or Discomfort
Definitely there will develop pain, soreness, discoloration, swelling and discomfort at the point of injection site in the jaws and mouth which will call for a few days rest as you take it easy at home. Expect to swell after wisdom teeth have been removed. This is normal and will take a maximum of 24 to 48 hours after surgery. If swelling is still present 3 or more days after surgery, there could be an indication of infection.
3. Mouth-Sinus Hole
The position of maxillary sinus is very close to the upper wisdom teeth roots. Actually for some people the roots go into the sinus. A mouth sinus hole which is an opening into the sinus might occur after the removal of the wisdom teeth though this is not often. When this happens, bacteria tend to enter and prevent speedy healing of the sinus. You might get a sinusitis infection and this does not respond well to antibiotics forcing you to go for another surgery to dry the sinus.
4. Nerve Damage
During surgery to remove lower wisdom teeth, nerves in your mouth might get damaged.Your lip, chin, cheek, teeth, and tongue may feel tingly or numb. To help you sense pain and temperature in your mouth, you use lingual nerve. If it is damaged it could affect your ability to taste.
5. Dry Socket (Alveolar Osteitis)
Some people get a throbbing pain after their operation, which is when a blood clot does not form properly in the socket. If you disregard the instructions given by the surgeon there is a likelihood of this happening. The surgeon will instruct you not to smoke, spit or drink using a straw. He might also be against playing of musical instruments. All this are not allowed because they will change the pressure inside the mouth and will cause dry socket.
6. Lower Jaw Fracture (Mandibular Fracture)

Lower jaw fracture can occur while removing or after removing a lower wisdom tooth. It is referred to as mandibular fracture. It is important to note that a mandibular fracture can occur during surgery which is called immediate mandibular fracture or it can occur sometime after surgery called late mandibular fracture which is usually within the first 4 weeks. For immediate mandibular fracture to occur, excessive force to the lower jaw must have been applied together with wrong instruments by the surgeon.

It is important for the oral surgeon to talk to you about things that could go wrong although all operations have risks. It is important to remember that the standard of care is not to go through all of the possible side effects and complications that can occur. After wisdom teeth have been removed, some common complications can be seen while others are rare. Sometimes the dentist or oral surgeon does not even notice them at all.
